Notes:
The first thing to note about Rim Ride is that its really easy to miss the turn off from Mr Motocross and instead end up way down in the valley. I had three goes at this, on separate days, before I found the right track. Study the video or spend more time on your GPS as you approach the end of Mr Motocross.
From Mr Motocross the trail drops quickly with a few medium sized rock drops and roll ins. It then winds its way downhill with some tight tracks and plenty of rock steps. I suspect after riding this section a few times you could have a pretty wild ride down the western end descent.
As the trail begins to flatten out the track starts getting rutty and by rutty I mean DEEP DEEP ruts - ones you could hide a submarine in. Whilst navigating (or walking) your way through the ruts keep an eye out for the right turn towards a big rock shelf. The Rim Ride continues from the Southern end of this rock. There are trails that head left and downhill, while I've not ridden these particular trails - they go down! In my previous attempts to find the Rim Ride I have ended up on similar trails and its been a LONG climb back out.
After the big rock shelf the trail undulates around the big C shaped mountainside. There are sections of deep ruts, rocky trails, dirt trails and rock shelves. There are quite a lot of small rocks to climb.
As you will see on the video about 17 minutes in the trail becomes easier with a fairly gentle dirt single track.
The section from the rock shelf (6 minutes on the video) to the point where the trail rounds the end of the ridge (17 minutes on the video) would actually be far more fun going in reverse. There are PLENTY of rock drops and roll ins and the trail would be largely on the descent. Of course this means a steep climb out at the Mr Motocross end).
When I shot this video I was still on the comeback from a heavy fall at Fred Caterson reserve and few times over the bars in the following weeks due to clay pits on the Main Trail, so I was pretty tentative. For me the name Rim Ride came with a touch of irony. I'm looking forward to riding this track again when my mojo is back to full strength.
IMPORTANT:
Rim Ride is a step up from everything else I've ridden at Red Hill. Its a couple of kilometers of rock steps, drops and roll ins, ruts, mud and rocky sections. If you're into this kind of thing then Rim Ride will be your Nirvana, however I wouldn't recommend hitting this section unless you have a reasonable level of skill or you will be walking most of the way. I haven't found a section at Red Hill with so many challenges, one after each other, for such a long way. While the video only goes for 21 minutes I spent over an hour on this section of trail taking into account breaks and multiple attempts at various sections.
