Notes:
I am not a Downhill rider and therefore I wasn't planning on including this on the site, but due to the interest in all trails at Thredbo I thought it was important to include. My first and only run on the Thredbo Downhill was my last run of the day, I was tired and riding a DH bike (Giant Glory 2) for the first time. To say I was tentative was an understatement and I only did it because the trail was empty and I was keen to say I had done it. I knew if I did the basics right the bike would handle the terrain and in the worse case scenario I would just walk a section if I got spooked and thats exactly what happened - I walked 3 sections, got a bit wild on a few occasions and went OTB once because I wasn't concentrating, but I got down in one piece.
I'm not a downhill rider - first DH run ever - first day on a DH bike .. don't expect Rampage :)
Terms and conditions apply to riding this trail - see www.thredbo.com.au for details.
As with the Kosciuszko Flow Trail the Downhill starts at the top of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift and descends via a steep and loose access road with a number of water bars and a tight corner before arriving at the start of the single trail. The Kosciuszko Flow Trail and Downhill start at the same single trail entry point with the Downhill continuing straight on at the first intersection.
The first section of single trail until Kareela Hutte is fairly flat with some relatively easy rock gardens. Below the Kareela Hutte you can merge onto the Kosciuszko Flow Trail or visa versa. This first section is easily ridden on an All Mountain bike and highly recommended if you prefer rocky sections - liked it much more than the first section of the Kosciuszko Flow Trail.
After Kareela Hutte the trail heads towards the old Ramshead Chairlift and its there that you will find some very gnarly rock gardens, steep winding shoots, narrow rock cuttings, some ladder bridges and plenty of things to get you into trouble - as you will see on the video.
The trail then winds its way back to the open area of the Super Trail ski run before intersecting and crossing over the Kosciuszko Flow Trail. Another opportunity to join or leave the Downhill.
From there the trail does a very fast traverse above the Bunny Walk station of the Snow Gums Chairlift where they have built a massive gap jump an alternate line table top jump or chicken run.
From the other side of the jumps (above the race course ski run) the trail heads back into the trees for some reasonably tight, steep and technical sections. While not ridiculously technical I was well and truly beat by this stage and chose to walk again.
The trail exits the trees and traverses back across the Super Trail ski run with an a-line jump near the Bag Jump location. From there its open trail eventually making its way towards the lift where one last set of jumps awaits.
After taking the chicken line .. again .. and then again .. the final section to the lift was fast and flowy.
