Notes:
City View starts from the top of ABC Switchbacks and runs adjacent to the road before becoming the Red Rock Lookout and climbing up to the start of Rocky’s trail at the Observatory.
After the long climb from Bobby Pin, Emu Run through to ABC Switchbacks, City view is a little easier going. The trail traverses the hillside with only a few small technical distractions over a very slight climb.
Red Rock Lookout steps it up a bit with far more rocks in the trail, tighter turns, steeper turns and a greater ascent. After climbing some 400m of vert the mind tricks and screaming lungs make this section much tougher than it really is. I suspect superhuman XC types with their carbon 29er hardtails fly up Red Rock Lookout with ease.
The trail had only recently re-opened when I shot the video, as you can see it’s very fresh. They were forced to re-cut the trail after an asbestos clean up was completed. You certainly can’t complain about the new track.
Red Rock Lookout pops out right at the entrance of Rocky’s which is further up than before the re-cut.
The end of Red Rock Lookout is a great place to take a break, there’s even a café (if you can find your way through the roadies).
But be warned .. the pain isn’t over. Rocky’s and Tall Trees still await!
