Before riding in the Pilot Wilderness make sure you have done your homework, done a very thorough check of the weather conditions and have all the necessary safety gear as this part of the country is unforgiving.
Bob’s Ridge to Cascade Creek is a commitment and you should be well prepared before attempting this section.
On the way out the trail is a 3.9km descent beginning with a fairly casual gradient over the first kilometre or so before the rate of descent increases.
The middle section is very steep and has a significant drop off to the side. There is quite a lot of large gravel, branches and leaves on the trail adding to the complexity. This was my second ride down this trail and I was pushing pretty hard, what may have looked effortless at times was not so. The trail is rough, heaps of rocks and branches. I was constantly moving around to avoid anything that could destroy a wheel or puncture a tyre.
After the stony creek crossing (where you can see a deer drinking) there is a small climb before a short descent down to Cascade Creek. The creek crossing is deep but there is a metal bridge just up stream.
On my first trip I had to climb back up this trail. It took me almost an hour to travel the 3.9km from Cascade Creek back up to Bob’s Ridge, a quick check of Strava indicates I’m not alone with a number of very capable cyclists I’ve ridden with taking over 40mins to complete the 328m climb.
If you make it down to Cascade Creek you may as well complete the next short stretch out to Cascade Hut.
