Notes:
The head of the Kitchener Track actually starts very obscurely from a driveway and subsequent access track between two houses from Linigen Place St Ives. If you’re riding this trail then please be considerate of the neighbours, you will literally ride through what for all intense and purposes is their backyard!
At the time of riding the trail was easily identified by the “Fox Baiting” signs that are prevalent throughout Garigal and Ku-Ring-Gai National Parks until at least 2014. When they are gone it might not be so obvious, so please study the video and maps.
After passing the houses the first section of trail is single track and quite narrow but it’s not long before the fire trail begins and with it comes a rough rocky climb, but not too challenging. From the top of the small climb the trail flattens and runs around the hillside with a number of undulations, wet spots and a couple of moderately steep and rough climbs. At times the trail is so overgrown it essentially becomes a single track.
About 2/3 of the way the trail from Kitchener Rd (hence the name) intersects from above (coming from the other direction) from here the main trail climbs a little up to the Ridge Top Track (a dirt road).
I quite liked this section, its raw unlike most of the high traffic homogenized trails in the area. I’m sure the locals get plenty of enjoyment out of it but the greater XC set would have little reason to ride it. So here’s my challenge to you - create a new route, start or include this section on your loop, it’s definitely worth the adventure!
