Notes:
This trail is often listed as running from Cooyong Rd to the cnr of Coolawie and Aumuna Rds but signage on the trails clearly shows Neverfail Gully Trail as going from Cooyong Rd to Coonawarra Rd. Read more about how we have broken up the trails.
The Neverfail Gully Trail starts Cooyong Rd, runs around the hillside and then back up to Coonawarra Rd. The trailhead is 100m or so back up the Cooyong Rd from the Cooyong Track trailhead.
The trail from Cooyong Rd starts with a moderate climb before easing slightly and rolling around the hillside. For the most part its an undulating trail up until the intersection of the Cooyong-Aumuna Trail (off to the right).
This first section of trail is generally pretty hard packed but quite rough in some sections. At the time of riding it didn't seem to be quite as well maintained as other trails in the area.
The Neverfail Gully Trail continues straight on for a short stint before turning left and serving up three short steep climbs broken up by water bars. However the worst is yet to come, after a small pedal a much larger climb awaits littered with loose rocks up to the size of grapefruits. I suppose there are some people who could climb it but it was hard enough to walk up such an extremely steep gradient with such a loose footing. After conquering the climb there is a short jaunt around the hillside and a small climb up to the gate at Coonawarra Rd.
This section of trail is very rough from top to bottom. Due to the low amount of traffic there are a lot of rocks and branches on the trail.
If riding down from Coonawarra Rd (as featured at the end of the video) take special care when descending down toward the intersection. The big hill has a riding line but come off the narrow cleared section and you could be in serious trouble due to the enormous number of large and loose rocks. Assuming you survived the first descent the following sections are steeper, they have some very large water bars and a rather tight and loose right turn at the bottom. Ride down with caution!
The Neverfail Gully Trail is definitely worth a ride but for most people it would be a way of linking the Cooyong Track to the Cooyong-Aunuma Trail. The section from Coonawarra Rd doesn't appear to have a lot of traffic and one would assume most who ride it are descending .. just for the opportunity to do so.
